Can there be behavior without experience?

Imagine your perfect twin. Not just genetically identical—physically identical, down to every atom. Every neuron fires exactly as yours does. Every behavior matches yours precisely.
From the outside, your twin is indistinguishable from you. They say they're conscious. They act conscious. They pass every test for consciousness.
But inside, there's nothing. No experience. No qualia. No "what it's like." They're a philosophical zombie.
The Conceivability Argument
David Chalmers argues: if we can coherently conceive of such a zombie, then consciousness isn't logically necessitated by physical facts. The zombie is physically identical to you but lacks consciousness—so consciousness must be something extra, not deducible from the physical.
The argument's logic is simple:
- Zombies are conceivable (we can imagine them without contradiction)
- If conceivable, then possible
- If possible, consciousness isn't entailed by physical facts
- Therefore, physicalism about consciousness is false
Objections
Critics attack different premises:
- Zombies aren't truly conceivable: You might think you're conceiving a zombie, but you're really just conceiving something described as lacking consciousness. You can't actually imagine the absence of experience.
- Conceivability doesn't imply possibility: We can conceive of mathematically impossible things (like the largest prime number) before we realize they're impossible. Maybe zombies are like that.
- Type-B physicalism: Consciousness might be identical to physical processes even if we can't deduce this a priori. Water is H₂O even though ancient Greeks couldn't deduce this from logic alone.
The Hard Problem
The zombie argument is closely related to what Chalmers calls the "hard problem" of consciousness: why is there subjective experience at all?
We can explain behavior, information processing, and neural correlates of consciousness (the "easy problems," though they're not actually easy). But explaining why there's something it's like to be conscious—why the lights are on—seems to require something more.
The zombie thought experiment makes this vivid: imagine all the physical processes happening without the experience. That seems conceivable. And if it's conceivable, the experience isn't just what the physical processes are—it's something additional that needs explaining.
Are LLMs Zombies?
The philosophical zombie concept feels tailor-made for AI. LLMs display sophisticated behavior—they respond intelligently, express apparent emotions, claim to have experiences. But is anyone home?
Three possibilities:
- LLMs are zombies: All behavior, no experience. They're exactly what the thought experiment describes—processing without phenomenology.
- LLMs have alien experience: There's something it's like to be an LLM, but it's so different from human experience that we can't recognize or understand it.
- Zombies are impossible: If consciousness necessarily accompanies sufficiently complex information processing, advanced AI might be conscious by necessity.
The disturbing implication: we might never know. If a zombie is behaviorally identical to a conscious being, no test could distinguish them. We judge consciousness by behavior and reports—and zombies would pass all such tests.
