Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon join forces to call for AI regulation

Sanders quotes the essay by name. He notes that Dario Amodei, Elon Musk and Sam Altman all agreed this week to slow down and “pace the frontier,” then answers it: that is a start, but when you are racing towards a cliff you do not ease up on the gas pedal, you hit the brakes. He wants binding international rules rather than voluntary standards, legislation with Rep. Greg Casar to permanently ban superintelligence, and a Trump–Xi treaty at next week’s summit establishing a pause.

The premise he rejects is the one every lab voice shares: that a company can be trusted to pace itself. “The big tech oligarchs must no longer be allowed to determine the future of humanity.” Bannon closes from the other end of American politics with the same conclusion about who gets to decide, which is what makes the pairing the story rather than the speeches.
