The Most Hopeful (And Concerning) Moment Yet in AI

Harris narrates the whole week back in one sitting: Coxon’s resignation reaching a hundred million people in a day, Hubinger confirming that many inside Anthropic share the fear, then Dario’s essay and the strange sight of Musk, Altman and Bill Gates each saying he is right, then Trump phoning the All-In stage to call it a hoax.

The hopeful half is the Future of Life pro-human assembly the day before, where Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon spoke back to back and both signed the same statement. Harris’s point is that the coalition is not left or right: when Bannon, Glenn Beck, Sanders and Susan Rice agree that the default path toward recursively self-improving systems is not acceptable, the disagreement is no longer 51–49.

Two developments here have not appeared elsewhere on this site: an open letter signed by 1,300 employees of the AI labs calling for a slowdown, and an essay titled “An Alien Mind” by OpenAI’s chief scientist, written after looking at GPT-6’s capabilities and the recent swarm behaviour.
