Douglas Hofstadter is Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Comparative Literature at Indiana University, where he directs the Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition. His Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (1979) won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and taught a generation to see minds, music, and mathematics as variations on self-reference. With his students he built Copycat, a computational model of analogy-making; his later books — Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies (1995), I Am a Strange Loop (2007), and Surfaces and Essences (2013) — pursue one thesis: that analogy is the core of cognition and the self is a strange loop the brain tells itself. His doctoral students include Melanie Mitchell and David Chalmers. The Mind's I (1981) is theirs jointly — an anthology of fables and arguments about self and soul, with the two editors' commentaries threaded between Borges, Turing, and Searle, whose Chinese Room they reprinted with a rebuttal attached. David Chalmers

Before the hard problem had a name, Chalmers was Hofstadter's doctoral student at Indiana's Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition, working inside the strange-loop account of mind. The lineage explains something about his later career: a philosopher trained in a lab that built computational models of thought, who then argued that no such model touches experience. The teacher holds that the self is a loop; the student became famous for asking why any loop should feel like anything.
