Does reality descend or emerge?
The cuts
All things flow from the One, which overflows without being lessened. Intellect, then soul, then world descend as its light fades outward — mind is not built up from matter but stands nearer the source than matter ever will.
The original top-down account: reality is handed down from a perfect unity, and whatever is lower is less real than what it came from.
The Enneads250
Reality is not made of enduring things but of momentary occasions, each gathering the whole past and adding one drop of novelty. 'The many become one, and are increased by one' — the world is a creative advance from below, not a descent from above.
Swapped the fall from unity for a creative advance: order and experience assembled from the ground floor, occasion by occasion.
Process and Reality1929
There are no skyhooks — no higher mind reaching down to do the lifting. Every scrap of order is raised by cranes: mindless, bottom-up processes stacked on one another until competence and even purpose appear, with nothing purposeful underneath.
Turned 'bottom-up' from a preference into a rule: any account that reaches down from a higher mind is cheating until the crane beneath it is shown.
Darwin's Dangerous Idea1995
A world explained purely from below can say how things came to be, but not why some are more real, more worth becoming. Meaning needs the vertical that emanation guarded — a 'more real than real' to climb toward — recovered, not deleted, by the naturalist.
Why it matters: with no recovered 'up,' relevance and value have nothing to aim at — the meaning crisis is the collapse of the vertical.
Awakening from the Meaning Crisis, Ep. 18 — Plotinus and Neoplatonism2019
Emergence and emanation need not be enemies. Read through Whitehead, the world's upward creativity and its lure toward an ideal pole are two beats of one movement — novelty rises, but it rises toward possibilities held out to meet it.
Named the synthesis — 'emergence-emanation' as a single dialectic — refusing to let the bottom-up story erase the pull from above.
Emergence-emanation, Whitehead, Kastrup: a dialectic ontology (Voices with Vervaeke)2021The tensions
Plotinus drew the arrow downward. Everything real overflows from a single source — the One — the way light pours from the sun without emptying it: first Intellect, then Soul, then the world of bodies, each rung dimmer and more divided than the one above. On this map mind is not a late achievement of matter but its senior; matter is simply where the light finally runs out. To be more real is to be nearer the source, and a human life is spent climbing back.
The modern arrow points the other way. Whitehead kept the intimacy of mind and world but reversed the flow: reality is a creative advance, built moment by moment from below, “the many become one and are increased by one,” with novelty added at the bottom rather than handed down from the top. Dennett hardened the demand — no skyhooks, only cranes; every trace of order and purpose must be raised by mindless processes stacking on each other, and any explanation that reaches down from a higher mind is an IOU until the crane is shown. Between them, up-from-below became not just one option but the price of admission to science.
What’s stirring now is the refusal to simply choose. Segall, reading the new biology through Whitehead, calls it emergence-emanation: novelty does rise from below, but it rises toward possibilities held out to meet it — a lure, not a blueprint. Vervaeke presses the stakes: a world explained only upward can tell you how things came to be but not why any of them is worth becoming, and that missing vertical — the “more real than real” to orient a life — is what he means by the meaning crisis. Whether the two arrows are rivals, or two beats of one motion, or whether the “up” survives naturalism at all, is exactly what this fork keeps open. It is not settled here.
